Our Story

W.S. Hornsby Elementary is named in honor of Walter Spurgeon Hornsby, Sr. (1882-1956), a founder of the Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company and developer of the Hornsby Subdivision. Opening in 1960 on historic Laney Walker Boulevard, the school later relocated to Kentucky Avenue in 2007. By 2009, it had merged with East Augusta Middle School, transforming into W.S. Hornsby K-8 School. This merger lasted until 2018 when the institution was reorganized into two separate entities: W.S. Hornsby K-3 and W. Hornsby 4-8. In a final change in 2020, it was established as W.S. Hornsby Elementary K-5 School, marking its current status in the community.

Our Points of Pride: 

  • Innovative Rewards: Implemented a book vending machine initiative to recognize and reward students for their academic achievements and positive behavior.
  • Literacy Focus: Designated as a Growing Readers School for Grades K-3, emphasizing early literacy and reading skills.
  • Grant Achievement: Awarded the CSRA Community Foundation grant, enhancing our literacy programs and resources.
  • Intergenerational Support: Integrated Foster Grandparents into our literacy initiatives, providing additional support and mentorship for students.
  • Community Partnerships: Fostered strong partnerships with local organizations and businesses, including: RISE Augusta, St. Paul Episcopal Church, Greater Young Zion Baptist Church, Augusta Nitrogen, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Zeta Xi Omega Chapter, Walton Oaks Community, Full Life Ministries, and Jessye Norman School of the Arts.

College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) is Georgia’s statewide accountability system. The CCRPI assesses how well students are prepared for college and careers, and ensures that schools are focused on improving achievement among all students. The index measures student achievement on indicators such as content mastery, student growth on progress, subgroup performance on closing gaps, and various areas including Lexile performance, attendance, and other academic based measurements. Schools earn CCRPI points based on indicators that vary by grade and school level and align with measures of college- and career-readiness.  Each individual component score is on a scale of 0-100.
